Great Technology Starts With a Problem Worth Solving.
There's no shortage of technology solutions promising to help businesses work faster, serve customers better, and become more efficient.
From CRM systems and mobile apps to workflow automation and AI-powered tools, businesses have more options than ever before.
And with technology evolving so quickly, it's understandable that no business wants to be left behind.
But when it comes to choosing the right technology for your business, there's a question worth asking before making another investment:
What problem are you actually trying to solve?
It's an important question because having more tools doesn't always mean getting better results.
Sometimes, what a business needs is a better way for employees to manage their tasks, access information, or communicate across departments.
Other times, it's about making services easier for customers to access, reducing delays, or improving their overall experience.
And quite often, the two go hand in hand.
How Do You Know What Technology Your Business Needs?
It's easy to assume that a new system will solve an existing problem. But if the problem isn't clearly understood, even the most advanced technology can become another tool employees struggle to use.
Think about a business where sales representatives regularly miss customer follow-ups.
The immediate response might be to invest in a new CRM system. But what if the business already has one, and the real challenge is that customer information isn't being updated or the follow-up process isn't clearly defined?
In that situation, improving how the existing CRM is used could make more of a difference than replacing it.
The same applies to businesses managing orders, deliveries, employees, or customer enquiries across different platforms.
Before deciding what technology to adopt, it helps to understand where things aren't working as they should.
Because the right solution starts with understanding the problem, not choosing the tool.
What Solving the Right Problem Looks Like: The Jecco App
Let's use a real example.
When we worked on the Jecco App for a gas delivery business in Jamaica, the goal wasn't simply to build another mobile application.
It was to make ordering and delivering gas easier for everyone involved.
Think about it from the customer's perspective.
When someone needs a gas refill, they want to place an order, make a payment, and know when to expect their delivery.
They shouldn't have to make several calls just to find out what's happening.
So, we developed a mobile app that allows customers to order gas, pay, track their deliveries, and receive updates directly from their phones.
But making things easier for customers was only half the picture.
Behind every order was a business that also needed to manage incoming requests, coordinate riders, track deliveries, and keep its operations organised.
That meant building more than a customer-facing application.
The solution also included a rider app to support delivery management and an administrative platform to help the business oversee orders and delivery activities.
By connecting these parts of the process, the technology addressed both sides of the experience.
Customers had a more convenient way to order gas and follow their deliveries, while the business gained better visibility into its daily operations.
And that's what makes technology valuable.
Not necessarily how sophisticated it is, but how well it addresses a real need.
The Right Business Technology Solution Isn't Always the Newest One
Of course, not every business needs a mobile app.
For one business, the answer might be a CRM system that helps its sales team manage leads, track customer interactions, and follow up consistently.
For another, it might be workflow automation that reduces the time employees spend entering the same information across multiple platforms.
And for a growing company, it could be a dashboard that gives management a clearer picture of sales, customer activity, or daily operations.
Sometimes, the right approach is to build something new. Other times, it's to improve the systems already in place.
The important thing is understanding what the technology needs to achieve.
A business doesn't necessarily become more efficient because it has more software. It becomes more efficient when its people, processes, and technology work well together.
Three Questions to Ask Before Investing in New Technology
Before introducing another system or investing in custom software development, here are three questions worth considering.
1. Where does work keep slowing down?
Are employees spending too much time moving information between systems, chasing approvals, or repeating tasks that could be handled more easily?
Look closely at the activities that regularly delay work. They often reveal where process improvements or automation could make a difference.
2. What do customers or employees repeatedly struggle with?
Sometimes, the clearest indication of what needs improving comes from the people who experience the problem every day.
It could be customers finding it difficult to place orders, employees struggling to access information, or managers spending hours putting reports together.
Understanding these frustrations helps you focus on solutions that make a practical difference.
3. Can your existing technology already solve the problem?
Before paying for another tool, consider whether the systems you already use can be improved, integrated, or configured differently.
A CRM that isn't being used effectively, for instance, may need better workflows and adoption rather than a replacement.
In some cases, the best technology investment isn't a new product. It's making better use of what you already have.
Start With the Problem, Not the Tool
Technology should make running a business easier, not introduce more complexity.
Whether you're considering a new mobile application, improving your CRM, automating internal processes, or finding better ways to serve your customers, the starting point remains the same.
Understand what needs to work better, then identify the technology that can help make it happen.
At Anchor Bridge Consulting, we help businesses take that approach by understanding their operational challenges and identifying practical technology solutions that support their goals.
Because great technology isn't about how many tools a business has.
It's about how much better the business works because of them.
